Most VPN providers claim to unblock Netflix. In our testing across Windows 11, Android 15, macOS Sequoia, and iOS 18, most do not at least not consistently, and not across all the streaming services that matter.
We tested 6 VPNs over four weeks against Netflix US, Netflix UK, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu. Here is what actually worked.
What We Tested and How
Before the rankings: the methodology matters, because streaming unblocking is unstable. Netflix actively rotates its VPN detection lists. A VPN that unblocks Netflix US today may fail tomorrow if its IP range gets flagged.
A VPN unblocks a streaming service by routing your connection through a server with an IP address the service recognizes as being in the target country. The challenge is that Netflix, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer maintain blocklists of known VPN IP ranges and update them regularly. VPN providers counter this by rotating server IPs, using residential IP addresses, and in some cases using obfuscation protocols that mask the VPN connection. A VPN that worked in January 2026 may not work in July 2026 if the provider has not kept pace with blocklist updates. Consistent streaming unblocking requires the provider to actively maintain their IP pool, which is a continuous operational cost that distinguishes providers who prioritize this use case from those who do not.
Our testing process:
- Connected to a server in the target country for each service
- Attempted to stream content exclusive to that region
- Tested each VPN three times over separate days and weeks
- Recorded connection speed retention (we used 500 Mbps baseline connections)
- Tested on both the web player and native apps
Services tested per VPN: Netflix US, Netflix UK, Disney+ US, BBC iPlayer (UK), Amazon Prime Video US, Hulu US.
The 5 Best VPNs for Streaming
1. ExpressVPN
Unblocked: Netflix US, Netflix UK, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, Hulu
ExpressVPN is the most consistent streaming VPN we have tested. It passed every service across every test in our July 2026 runs. It also unblocked Netflix UK from a US connection and BBC iPlayer, which are the two services where other providers most commonly fail.
Speed: on our 500 Mbps baseline, ExpressVPN with Lightway protocol retained 88% of baseline speed. That is fast enough for 4K streaming with headroom. Switching to OpenVPN TCP dropped retention to 74% still usable for HD streaming but not ideal for 4K if your base connection is below 50 Mbps.
The iOS and macOS apps are also the best designed of any provider we tested. For users on Apple devices, this matters: split tunneling (unavailable on NordVPN's current macOS app) lets you route only your streaming app through the VPN while keeping other traffic direct. See our ExpressVPN review for the full breakdown.
Price: $8.32/month (annual plan). Higher than alternatives.
Best for: Users who need consistent results across all services and do not want to think about server selection.
2. NordVPN
Unblocked: Netflix US, Netflix UK, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu
Failed: BBC iPlayer (2 of 3 test runs)
NordVPN's server network is large enough that when a streaming optimized server IP gets blocked by Netflix, there are others to switch to. Its SmartDNS feature (SmartPlay) handles unblocking for some services without routing all traffic through the VPN, which improves streaming speed.
Speed: NordLynx (WireGuard based) retained 91% of baseline speed the fastest of any provider we tested for streaming. For 4K content at 15-25 Mbps, this is more than adequate. The speed advantage only matters if you are on a slow base connection.
The BBC iPlayer failure was consistent across two of three sessions. iPlayer detection appears to target NordVPN's UK server IP ranges more aggressively than other providers' ranges. If BBC iPlayer is your primary use case, ExpressVPN or ProtonVPN are more reliable choices.
See our NordVPN review for full test results.
Price: $3.99/month (two year plan). Best value of the providers we tested.
Best for: Netflix and Disney+ users who prioritize speed and want the most affordable option.
3. ProtonVPN
Unblocked: Netflix US, Netflix UK, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Amazon Prime
Failed: Hulu (2 of 3 test runs)
ProtonVPN's Stealth protocol (a WireGuard variant with obfuscation) bypassed BBC iPlayer more consistently than NordVPN in our testing. ProtonVPN also has a Streaming-optimized server designation in their app, which makes server selection less guesswork.
Speed: ProtonVPN retained 83% of baseline on WireGuard. Slower than NordVPN but comfortably above the threshold for 4K streaming. On iOS, IKEv2 was slightly faster than WireGuard a ProtonVPN specific behavior we observed across multiple tests.
Hulu detection appears to target ProtonVPN's US IP ranges. In two of three Hulu test sessions, the service showed an error. If Hulu is on your list, NordVPN is more reliable.
Price: $4.99/month (annual plan). Mid range.
Best for: Privacy focused users who also want streaming, particularly for BBC iPlayer.
4. Surfshark
Unblocked: Netflix US, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu
Failed: Netflix UK (inconsistent), BBC iPlayer (consistently failed)
Surfshark unblocks US based streaming services reliably. Netflix UK and BBC iPlayer are where it falls short. In our testing, the Netflix UK failure was inconsistent 1 of 3 sessions worked, 2 did not which is worse than a consistent failure because you cannot plan around it.
Speed: Surfshark retained 85% of baseline on its NexGen (WireGuard-based) protocol. Adequate for streaming.
At $2.30/month on a two year plan, Surfshark is the cheapest provider we tested. If you only need Netflix US and are not watching British content, it is a reasonable value option.
Best for: Budget users focused on Netflix US, Disney+, and Hulu.
5. Mullvad
Unblocked: Netflix US only (inconsistently)
Failed: Netflix UK, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu
Mullvad is built for privacy, not streaming. Its no logs architecture, account number based subscriptions, and resistance to traffic correlation make it the strongest privacy focused consumer VPN available. However, its IP pool is deliberately limited, and the company does not invest resources in maintaining streaming optimized server pools or bypassing content detection systems. In our July 2026 tests, Mullvad unblocked Netflix US in 1 of 3 attempts. It failed to unblock Netflix UK, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and Hulu in all test runs. If streaming unblocking is a requirement alongside privacy, ProtonVPN is the better combination of both. If privacy is the only requirement, Mullvad is the stronger choice. See our Mullvad VPN review for the full privacy analysis.
Best for: Privacy first users who do not need streaming. Not recommended if unblocking is a requirement.

What Actually Matters for Streaming
IP rotation speed. Netflix updates its blocklist continuously. A provider with a large IP pool and fast rotation responds faster when one range gets flagged. ExpressVPN and NordVPN both have the scale to absorb blocklist updates without most users noticing. Smaller providers with fixed IP pools are more vulnerable.
Protocol choice. Speed matters for 4K streaming. WireGuard-based protocols (NordLynx, Lightway, WireGuard) consistently outperform OpenVPN for streaming because lower latency reduces buffering. If your VPN defaults to OpenVPN, switch to WireGuard if available. See our VPN protocols guide for how to change this.
Server location granularity. BBC iPlayer requires a UK server. Netflix catalogs differ between UK and US. Having specific city-level servers (London vs. Manchester) gives the provider more IP diversity to work with when one range gets blocked. NordVPN and ExpressVPN both offer city-level selection. Mullvad does not prioritize this.
Does Split Tunneling Help for Streaming?
For streaming, split tunneling lets you route only your streaming app through the VPN while other traffic connects directly. This improves overall device speed and reduces the VPN's load. On Windows and Android, all five providers above support split tunneling. On macOS, NordVPN does not (as of July 2026). On iOS, only ExpressVPN supports it.
For split tunneling setup and when it makes sense, see our VPN split tunneling guide.
How Often Do Streaming Blocks Change?
Netflix and iPlayer update their detection more frequently than most providers update their IP pools. In practice:
- ExpressVPN has been the most consistent across six months of our testing
- NordVPN handles Netflix well but has struggled with iPlayer in the past year
- Any provider can fail for a period after a detection update
If you find your VPN stops unblocking a service, the fastest fix is switching servers within the same provider. If all servers for that region fail, the provider has not yet rotated their IP pool. The wait is usually 24-72 hours for major providers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which VPN works best with Netflix in 2026?
ExpressVPN worked on Netflix US and Netflix UK in all our test runs. NordVPN was faster and more affordable but failed BBC iPlayer. Both are strong choices if Netflix is the primary service.
Does a free VPN work for streaming?
Free VPNs have small IP pools that get blocked quickly and permanently. They also impose data limits that make streaming impractical. ProtonVPN's free tier does not include streaming-optimized servers. For streaming, a paid VPN is the only reliable option.
Will using a VPN for streaming slow down my connection?
With a modern protocol (WireGuard or Lightway), speed loss is 10-17% from baseline. On a 100 Mbps connection, this still leaves 83-90 Mbps more than adequate for 4K streaming (which requires about 25 Mbps). The impact is only noticeable on slower connections below 35 Mbps.
Is using a VPN for streaming against Netflix terms?
Netflix terms prohibit circumventing geographic restrictions. In practice, Netflix blocks VPN IP ranges rather than taking action against individual accounts. No account has been reported suspended for VPN use. The risk is service denial (an error message), not account penalty.
Which VPN is best for BBC iPlayer?
In our testing, ExpressVPN and ProtonVPN were the most consistent for BBC iPlayer. NordVPN and Surfshark failed more frequently on iPlayer than on Netflix or Disney+.
Tested July 2026 on 500 Mbps baseline connections from the US, with UK server tests run from US origin. All streaming tests used the native web player and app. Morgan Logan independently tests VPN services at Privaroo. No VPN provider paid for or influenced this article.
