NordVPN vs ExpressVPN: 8 Tests, One Clear Answer for 2026
NordVPN and ExpressVPN have been at the top of every major "best VPN" list for years. Both are audited. Both are fast. Both passed our leak tests.
The honest version: for most US users, either one works. The differences that matter are price, jurisdiction, simultaneous connections, and what you're using the VPN for. We ran both through 8 identical tests at Privaroo in June 2026 so you can make a decision based on data rather than affiliate rankings.
Short version: NordVPN edges out ExpressVPN on price and speed. ExpressVPN holds its own on protocol transparency and ISO certifications. Neither is wrong.

Leak Test Results
We ran both NordVPN and ExpressVPN through five identical leak checks in June 2026: DNS leak test, WebRTC leak test, IPv6 exposure test, kill switch activation test, and real-network behavior test on hotel Wi-Fi. Both VPNs produced zero leaks across all five checks. Neither exposed a real IP address, DNS resolver, or IPv6 address on any tested server location. Kill switches on both services activated correctly in forced-disconnection scenarios on Windows 11. On iOS 18, both VPNs held during network drops. In eight tests run in identical conditions, NordVPN and ExpressVPN are indistinguishable on privacy and leak prevention. The choice between them does not come down to security — it comes down to the criteria below.
For the full methodology behind these checks, see our VPN leak test guide.
Speed: NordVPN Is Faster, But the Gap May Not Matter
NordVPN is faster. In our June 2026 testing on a 940 Mbps fiber baseline:
- NordVPN (NordLynx): 856 Mbps — 91% retention
- ExpressVPN (Lightway): 818 Mbps — 87% retention
The 38 Mbps difference is real. Whether it matters depends entirely on your use case:
The gap does not matter if: You're on a residential connection under 200 Mbps, streaming 4K video, or doing everyday browsing. Both VPNs are far faster than those tasks require.
The gap might matter if: You're transferring large files, running a VPN on a gigabit office connection, or gaming at the absolute margin of latency sensitivity.
On mobile (4G/LTE baseline), the difference narrows further — both VPNs added under 10 ms of latency in our tests.
Protocols: Two Different Approaches
NordLynx (NordVPN)
NordLynx is NordVPN's WireGuard-based protocol. WireGuard is the gold standard for modern VPN protocols — it's lightweight, fast, and has been publicly audited multiple times since its introduction. NordLynx wraps WireGuard in a double-NAT system to address WireGuard's default IP logging behavior.
Audit history: WireGuard itself has extensive public audit records. NordLynx specifically has been reviewed as part of NordVPN's infrastructure audits.
Lightway (ExpressVPN)
Lightway is ExpressVPN's proprietary protocol, built on the wolfSSL cryptographic library rather than a kernel-level implementation. It is open-source — the code is publicly available for review. Cure53 and Praetorian have both audited Lightway, with the most recent audit in 2025.
The key difference: Lightway is ExpressVPN's own protocol; WireGuard is an independent open standard. Open standards with independent origins typically accumulate more diverse security review over time. That said, Lightway has been audited specifically, which is more than can be said for most proprietary VPN protocols.
Our recommendation: Use WireGuard/NordLynx on NordVPN, use Lightway on ExpressVPN. Both are solid choices. Neither OpenVPN nor IKEv2 is necessary on either service for most users in 2026.
Audit Trail: Both Are Credible, With Different Auditors
As of June 2026, NordVPN has completed six consecutive no-logs audits by Deloitte Audit Lithuania under the ISAE 3000 international assurance standard, most recently in December 2025. ExpressVPN has completed three no-logs audits by KPMG, most recently in 2025, plus ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 27017, and ISO 27018 certifications obtained in February 2026. ISO 27001 is a formal information security management certification — it requires documented processes and annual surveillance audits, not just a point-in-time assessment. Both VPNs have credible, recurring audit records. NordVPN's longer Deloitte relationship and six consecutive audits represent the stronger single-auditor consistency; ExpressVPN's ISO certifications represent a broader institutional security framework. Neither company's audit trail contains any findings that contradict their no-logs claims.
Jurisdiction: Both Are Outside Intelligence-Sharing Alliances
This is the category where both VPNs hold an advantage over Surfshark and most other large VPN providers.
NordVPN — Panama: Panama has no mandatory data retention laws and is not part of any Eyes alliance (Five, Nine, or Fourteen). No international intelligence-sharing agreement compels NordVPN to collect or share user data.
ExpressVPN — British Virgin Islands: The BVI is a British Overseas Territory but operates independently of UK surveillance law for this purpose. It is not subject to GCHQ data retention requirements. There are no local mandatory data retention laws.
In practice: Both jurisdictions are as favorable as you can find for a commercial VPN service. If your threat model requires a non-Eyes jurisdiction, either NordVPN or ExpressVPN satisfies that requirement — unlike Surfshark (Netherlands, Nine Eyes) or IPVanish (United States, Five Eyes).
For the rare situation where even Panama and BVI feel insufficient — journalists under active surveillance, for example — Mullvad (Sweden, outside all alliances) and ProtonVPN (Switzerland) are the correct options.
Price: NordVPN Costs Less
On a 2-year plan in June 2026:
- NordVPN: ~$3.09/month (~$74 upfront, 2 years)
- ExpressVPN: ~$4.99/month billed annually (~$60/year)
ExpressVPN does not publicly offer a 2-year plan — annual is the longest term. That makes a direct comparison slightly awkward: NordVPN's 2-year promotional price is lower, but it's a longer upfront commitment.
Year 2 renewal: Both services increase prices significantly at renewal. NordVPN renews at approximately $99/year; ExpressVPN at approximately $100/year. Budget for the renewal rate, not the promotional rate.
If price is a primary factor and both VPNs meet your other requirements, NordVPN costs less on the promotional period. At renewal, they're roughly equivalent.
Features Comparison
| Feature | NordVPN | ExpressVPN |
|---|---|---|
| Split tunneling (Windows) | Yes | Yes |
| Split tunneling (iOS) | No | No |
| Ad/tracker blocking | Yes (Threat Protection) | No (built-in) |
| Double VPN | Yes | No |
| Obfuscated servers | Yes | Yes (Lightway obfuscation) |
| Browser extensions | Chrome, Firefox | Chrome, Firefox, Edge |
| Router app | Yes | Yes |
| Max devices | 10 | 8 |
NordVPN advantage: Threat Protection (ad blocking + malware filtering) is built in. Double VPN for multi-hop routing. 2 extra simultaneous connections.
ExpressVPN advantage: ISO certifications. Lightway protocol is fully open-source. The ExpressVPN app is consistently rated as more polished on macOS.
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose NordVPN if:
- Price matters — it's approximately $1.50-2/month cheaper on a 2-year promotional plan
- You want more simultaneous connections (10 vs 8)
- You want built-in ad and tracker blocking
- You need double VPN / multi-hop routing
Choose ExpressVPN if:
- You're primarily on macOS and want the better-rated desktop app
- You want ISO 27001 certification as part of your security posture (relevant for business use)
- You prefer Lightway's open-source protocol with its specific audit history
- You want to pay annually rather than commit to a 2-year upfront payment
Choose neither if:
Your threat model requires the maximum jurisdictional protection available. In that case, Mullvad at $5/month flat, no promotion, no upsell, has the strongest privacy architecture we have tested at Privaroo.
Our Verdict
NordVPN: 4.2/5 — Better value per dollar. Faster. More features. Panama jurisdiction with the best consecutive audit record in the industry.
ExpressVPN: 4.0/5 — Marginally pricier. Excellent ISO-certified security framework. Better macOS app. BVI jurisdiction equally favorable.
The gap between them is real but narrow. You will not make a wrong choice picking either one. The only wrong choice is picking a VPN based on affiliate commission rates — which is how most "NordVPN vs ExpressVPN" articles are actually written.

FAQ
Is NordVPN safer than ExpressVPN?
Both VPNs passed all five of our leak tests with zero DNS, WebRTC, or IPv6 exposure in June 2026. Both have independently verified no-logs policies — NordVPN audited by Deloitte six times, ExpressVPN by KPMG three times plus ISO 27001 certification. Neither VPN is meaningfully "safer" than the other. The meaningful difference is jurisdiction (Panama vs British Virgin Islands — both outside intelligence alliances) and protocol history.
Which is faster — NordVPN or ExpressVPN?
NordVPN was faster in our June 2026 testing: 91% speed retention versus 87% for ExpressVPN on a 940 Mbps fiber baseline. On connections under 200 Mbps — which covers most US residential broadband — the difference is imperceptible in daily use. NordVPN's speed advantage is most meaningful on high-speed gigabit connections or large file transfers.
Does NordVPN or ExpressVPN work with Netflix?
Both unblocked US Netflix in our June 2026 testing. Both also successfully accessed UK Netflix and other regional libraries from US server connections. Netflix regularly updates geo-block detection — verify before subscribing if streaming unblocking is your primary use case.
Why is ExpressVPN more expensive than NordVPN?
ExpressVPN's base pricing is higher and it does not offer a 2-year plan (only annual and monthly). NordVPN's lower 2-year promotional price is partly explained by the longer commitment. At year-two renewal, both services cost approximately $99-100/year — the pricing gap closes significantly after the first term.
Which VPN is better for torrenting?
Both NordVPN and ExpressVPN support P2P traffic. NordVPN designates specific P2P-optimized servers; ExpressVPN allows P2P on all servers. For dedicated torrenting use, our best VPN for torrenting guide covers this in detail with specific test results.
