How we tested
To remove guesswork, every VPN went through the same protocol on the same hardware:
- Device: iPhone 15 Pro iOS 18.4 90% battery to start
- Network baseline: 940 Mbps fiber Wi-Fi 5G cellular for the network-switch test
- Tests run on each VPN:

1. NordVPN best overall iPhone VPN
iOS App Store: 4.7 1.2M+ reviews Pricing: $3.39/mo (2-year plan) to $12.99/mo (monthly).
NordVPN is the highest-rated mainstream VPN on the iOS App Store and the fastest one we tested. The NordLynx protocol (a WireGuard implementation) retained 87% of our raw fiber speed the highest score in our test. Battery drain was higher than Mullvad (9% extra over 4 hours) but acceptable.

What works on iPhone:

Mullvad has fewer App Store reviews because it doesn’t market but its privacy posture is among the cleanest we’ve audited. No email signup, no tracking, anonymous payment options (including cash by mail). Lowest battery drain of any VPN with full leak protection (6%).

What works on iPhone:
- Anonymous account creation (16-digit number, no email)
- Open-source iOS app
- Flat 5 pricing no commitment, no renewal traps
- WireGuard by default (faster than OpenVPN, lower battery use)
- Kill switch and DNS leak protection on by default
What doesn’t work as well:
- Streaming is unreliable (Netflix worked sometimes, failed others in our tests)

What the 7 VPNs that didn’t make the list got wrong
The 7 that failed our test failed for predictable reasons (numbers based on our January 2026 test):
- 3 had IPv6 leaks the iOS app didn’t tunnel IPv6 traffic
- 2 had DNS leaks detected at dnsleaktest.com despite the VPN being connected
- 1 had a battery drain over 18% in 4 hours too high for daily iPhone use
- 1 had no third-party audit at all couldn’t verify the no-logs claim
